One of Shakespeare's late romances, The Tempest is traditionally considered to be his last non-collaborative play, with its first known performance on 1st November 1611 at the Palace of Whitehall, London.

The Tempest explores family ties in a mythical setting. The sorcerer, Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, who with his daughter, Miranda, has been stranded for twelve years on an island following Prospero's deposition by his jealous brother, Antonio, raises a storm which causes Antonio's ship to run aground on the island.
